Cutbacks Fueling Community College Online Programs

Washington State Gov. Chris Gregoire is exploring ways to cut the state budget, and the state’s community colleges are actually receiving benefits from the cuts.

She points toward the state’s community colleges as examples of how technology has been used to better serve customers by offering online degree programs to more than 18,000 students.

Rich Cummins, president of Columbia Basin College in Pasco, told the Kennewick Tri-City Herald that, if all of those students took classes at brick-and-mortar schools, it would require the equivalent of four extra community colleges.

CBC started developing an online curriculum 12 years ago and now offers an entirely online associate of arts degree, Cummins told the newspaper He said that’s in line with what the current generation of students wants. He further noted that offering online classes has made the college more efficient by allowing it to offer more classes without taking up more physical space or using resources such as paper.

CBC is exploring more options for e-learning to cut costs under a state mandate to reduce its budget, Cummins said.
