Issues with New Course Builder?

01/21/13 06:01 PM

Google Course Builder is a specialized software for building, delivering, and storing online course materials, originally launched by Google in September 2012 with an introductory video. Driven by Google’s powerful search technology, it is meant to make it possible for a teacher or trainer to build and manage an online course.

There are a few existing issues with Google Course Builder, though, as pointed out by Tom Bishop, director of marketing and communications at KnowledgeVision Systems, Lincoln, Mass.:

1) It is an open-source platform, so it requires technical skills at the level of a webmaster.

2) It is designed to integrate heavily with Google Plus, for sharing and using hangouts for student feedback and “office hours.” This means a limitation of 10 participants at the hangouts.

3) It is meant to rely on YouTube and Gmail for communication, raising privacy and control issues.

4) It isn’t an easily-encapsulated user experience, with at least 30 steps to the process of creating and managing a course.
