I.T. managers believe that the challenge of security is the most important issue for enterprises whose employees are using mobile devices, according to a November survey conducted by the Enterprise Device Alliance (EDA).
I.T. managers were asked whether their organization had set some limitations on corporate “tablet” use. They responded that security is their top concern, mainly because devices get stolen or lost (59%) and access to corporate information is more difficult to secure (54%).
Compared to the same survey conducted last year, the respondents seemed more aware and concerned about security issues with mobile devices. “Devices don’t meet our security standards” (65%) replaced “devices are too easy to steal/lose” (59%) as the most popular factor that limits corporate support of mobile devices.
This year, 86% said that their organization allows some degree of BYOD, up from 75% a year ago. Even among organizations with more than 10,000 employees, more than four fifths (81%) allow some employees to bring their own devices. Allowing BYOD adds the complication of separating, isolating and securing company information, access, and applications from personal information and applications.
The survey also revealed how many more organizations will begin using a mobile device management (MDM) solution to proactively manage smartphones and “tablets.” Although just 16% of respondents were using them in 2011, another 34% indicated that they would be using MDMs by the end of 2012.
This second annual online survey was conducted among commercial, government and educational organizations with more than 100 employees. More than 70% of the respondents were from organizations with more than 500 employees.
