As learning becomes more student-centered, a number of digital education trends will continue to grow in K-12 education in 2015, according to Tanya Roscorla of the Center for Digital Education.  Most focus on the student. Here are Roscorla's top five:

1) Personalized learning — Creating digital learning environments that are tailored to students' individual needs, skill levels and interests, creating multiple pathways to learn

2) Competency-based education — Lets students create knowledge, analyze a situation and produce evidence of their learning

3) Digital learning outcomes — Including the expectation by educators of more hard facts about whether students learn better with things like digital content or online courses

4) Digital course access — About 11 states now allow students to take individual online courses from charter schools instead of having to sign up for a state or district online school

5) Blended and digital learning adoption at the local level — More local school districts and schools are adopting digital learning such as online courses

The workplace underwent significant changes in 2014, with a shift towards eliminating "old school" management practices and embracing more open work environments and increasing in flexibility on the job. As predicted at the start of the year by Fierce, Inc., these changes have included less hierarchical titles across organizations, more flexibility beyond the standard work hours, and a drop in the traditional performance review process.

"As organizations across the globe continue to shift to a workplace that focuses less on outdated best practices and more on people, not only are the employees going to benefit, but the entire company will," says Halley Bock, president and CEO of Fierce, Inc. Sales and marketing alignment has become a hot topic as leaders realize that getting the two groups on the same page yields greater revenue growth, shorter sales cycles and higher customer retention. Many organizations, however, struggle to create sales and marketing synergy that delivers a measureable business impact. They fail to recognize and address one of the key barriers to alignment: a lack of marketing training.

Marketo's "2013 Sales and Marketing Alignment Study" reported that in organizations with one to three days of marketing training annually, 21 percent of MQLs (marketing qualified leads) close. Increase training to eight to 10 days a year, and that closing percentage jumps to 35 percent. Organizations with more than 10 days of marketing training per year see closure rates of 60 percent of sales qualified leads that had resulted in proposals.

Why does training make such a big difference? One possible explanation: well-trained marketers deliver more effective programs. They're better equipped to create the types of messages, experiences and calls to action that resonate with their audiences. They're also more likely to understand how to track program results and optimize based on past success or failure.
"In the past, sales has had personalized, one-to-one conversations with prospects, while marketers have delivered higher-level messages target¬ing broader audiences," notes Valerie Witt, MarketingProfs vice president of Professional Development Solutions. "Now, marketers are challenged to deliver more personalized communications that leverage what they know about someone based on their behavior. It's a different approach. There's also greater emphasis on using technology and data to deliver more effective marketing campaigns. Companies that commit to developing their marketers' skills give themselves a competitive advantage."

While investments in sales-centric learning and development are increasing according to the ASTD "2013 State of the Industry" report, marketing training is not keeping pace. In fact, investments in marketing professional development are shrinking as companies attempt to maintain flat budgets while adding in new marketing technologies and tactics.
The recent "CMO Survey" reported that spending on marketing training and developing new marketing capabilities have steadily decreased since August 2012. The survey also found that while companies expect to increase spending on marketing analytics over the next three years, less than half believe they have the right talent to fully leverage analytics.

In addition, most companies plan to increase spending on social media and digital advertising, though only 16 percent have qualitative data on the impact of social media on the business. Almost half — 49 percent — have not been able to show the impact of their social media investments.  "Most businesses are asking marketers to think differently and use new tools without preparing them to do that," Witt says. "Until companies invest in learning for marketers the way they invest in leadership, management and sales development, they're unlikely to realize true sales and marketing alignment."

Eighty-four percent of upper and mid-level management at 40 professional services firms say that their staff is inconsiderate and rude in the workplace. In addition, the same respondents cited by 65 percent that they felt a majority of their staff lacked a moral compass.
Respondents cited their company's "political correctness," their own inability to have confrontation, and constraints instituted by their human resources department as stumbling blocks. Among the items most mentioned by managers were:

1) untimely and inappropriate use of cellphones
2) wearing inappropriate clothing to work
3) complete lack of courtesy
4) use of street talk and signs in professional meetings
5) the inability of younger staff to write a letter/email
6) the lack of personal responsibility
7) failure to say "please" and "thank you"
8) lying to phone caller
9) hanging up on phone calls when they are confronted and were uncomfortable
10) cheating on time billed to clients and stealing time by arriving late and leaving early

The number of smartphone users worldwide will surpass 2 billion in 2016 — after nearly getting there in 2015. Next year, there will be more than 1.91 billion smartphone users across the globe, a figure that will increase another 12.6% to near 2.16 billion in 2016.

By 2018, more than one-third of consumers worldwide, or more than 2.56 billion people, will do so. That 2018 figure also represents 51.7% of all mobile phone users, meaning that feature phones will have finally become a minority in the telecommunications world.

In the U.S., smartphone users will surpass 200 million by 2017, or nearly 65% of the country's total population.

David Kelly of the U.K.'s eLearning Guild believes that wearable technology will change learning forever, the title of his upcoming speech at the Learning Technologies Conference in London.  In the last few decades, the emergence of home computers brought us e-learning, and the proliferation of mobile and smartphones has brought us mobile learning. Both of these technological advances have fundamentally changed how we look at learning and performance programs. Another technological advance is coming, one that will once again change some of our definitions and how we address performance issues: wearable technology.

Kelly is scheduled to explore:
