What Companies Want From Social Learning

According to Pam Boiros, vice president of product marketing for SkillSoft, the reasons for using social learning outweigh the possible hurdles to using it.

What do organizations want from social learning? Boiros lists eight requirements:

1) Cross-generational appeal

2) Discovery of knowledgeable colleagues

3) Shared best practices and capture of tacit knowledge

4) Intuitive to use and easy to roll out

5) Enhances learning programs

6) Respects privacy

7) Ownership of user-generated content

8) Safe, trusted, proven environment

Yet, there are five things that organizations — and their learners — definitely do not want from social learning alternatives:

1) Yet another destination

2) “Free-form drivel”

3) Additional investment without clear ROI

4) More LMS integration and/or customization

5) Competitive or legal risk

6) IT security risk
