What Corporate CEOs Observe About the Changing Marketplace
Not too long ago, analyst and futurist Elliott Masie interviewed the CEOs of companies that market various learning management systems. Main topic was the changing world of elearning. ELLEN WAGNER, DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL EDUCATION SOLUTIONS, ADOBE SYSTEMS: “I see three really big trends. One is moving from monolithic types of learning experiences — the self-contained courseware — to more modular types of presentations of content and experience. [Another] is a shift from where content is available and is effectively pushed to people to one which is being more actively pulled. The other one that’s particularly exciting is the shift from the ‘sage-on-the-stage’ perspective to getting the learning stakeholders to engage more actively and negotiate a shared experience — the whole notion of social media.”
JOHN AMBROSE, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF CORPORATE DEVELOPMENT AND EMERGING BUSINESS, SKILLSOFT: “We’re moving from an era of system-centric learning to user-centric learning. Imagine a great restaurant on an island with one toll road in and out. Learning systems used to be like that toll booth that every user painfully needs to pass through whenever they wanted a great meal. Today, effective learning systems need to be able to reach all the places in organizations where users are actually congregating. It’s not just the LMS but portals, intranet sites, extranet sites, et cetera. The other thing is that it’s important that all learning be made available in all the different forms that users want to consume … like a blended leadership program.”
TIM HILL, PRESIDENT OF BLACKBOARD’S PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION SOLUTIONS GROUP: “I think you see some pretty significant demographic and psychographic changes happening in the workforce in general. I’m at the tail end of 80 million baby boomers who are going to be retiring over the next 15 to 20 years, so that workforce is going to be replaced by Gen-X, Gen-Y and new Millennial learners who have grown up with technology and blended learning. They learn differently. They process differently. So they are not only expecting but demanding technologies that they use every day in the way that learning and training is delivered to them.”
