A Major Element of Employee Training Programs

BizLibrary conducted a market survey that ran from Sept. 18, 2011 through Oct. 18, 2011 to learn more about how organizations are delivering training to employees. What we’ve learned is that formal training methods continue to dominate employee training programs. This finding is not a surprise. What we really wanted to see is the mix or blend of training methods organizations are using in their employee development programs. The chart below is based upon the survey results with participants identifying the various elements they currently use in employee training programs. The results show the dominance of formal training methods in today’s market.

Technology-based training methods are used heavily with 67.0% of the participating organizations using traditional e-learning, 33.5% delivering content using streaming, online video, and 27.9% using DVD programs to train employees. These finding indicate a significant acceleration in the use and adoption of technology-based employee training. As recently as 2009 market survey data showed that 26% of organizations were using e-learning and in 2009 the number had risen to 39%. (The Evolution of Elearning, by Christopher Musico.) There are numerous similar studies, and they share a common theme – the use of web-based training is rising, and is a central feature of employee training programs.

The use of online video is a technology-based training method that is really gaining
traction. BizLibrary’s results show a rate of use at 33.5%, showing online video is emerging as a powerful tool in employee training programs. The BizLibrary survey also reveals that the use of online video does not vary much by organization size. Short topical video is everywhere, so it’s not surprising that video use for employee training is higher than ever before.


Corporate Universities – one client in the medical services auditing industry developed their own internal university with the majority of the curriculum
being e-learning. The organization is small with about 320 employees, but the
employees are scattered 28 different client locations. They simply could not get employees to the same location at the same time for classroom training. The internal university is an integral part of a true learning culture where success and progress are monitored and shared at the organization’s annual meeting. Key programs where e-learning plays a central role include leadership development and new hire orientation.

Blended Learning – another BizLibrary client in the communications industry uses the streaming video collection (Best of Elearning! 2011 Award Winner for Best Soft Skills Content) with the business and professional skills e-learning catalog to supplement their classroom training sessions. This award-winning organization uses the online video four different ways – pre-classroom study, post-classroom reinforcement, as elements within classroom sessions, and as stand-alone learning resources. The employees routinely rate the video programs higher than other training program elements citing the quality of the content, length (usually short) and on-demand access as reasons for the high level of satisfaction with the online video courses.
