Student Online Learning Picks Up

Here are some interesting statistics from a survey of higher-education academics, as illustrated in a new infographic:

>> The number of higher education students taking at least one distance education course increased to 5.3 million in 2013, up 3.7% from the previous year.

>> 70.8% of academic leaders reported online learning is critical to their institution’s long-term strategy.

>> 74.1% of academic leaders rated the learning outcomes in online education as the same or superior to those in face-to-face instruction.

>> 44.6% of chief academic officers agreed that retaining students was a greater problem for online courses than for face-to-face courses.

Source for these numbers is the Online Learning Consortium’s 2014 Survey of Online Learning conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group, the leading barometer of online learning in the United States.
