Keeping Employees Engaged

Summer. A time for fun, sun and, maybe, even a little daydreaming — yes, even during work hours. And this may also be at a point in time when for many a significant period has passed since they had their annual objective setting process.

So the question is, “How can managers keep their employees’ minds engaged, motivated and focused when summertime comes calling?”

Answer: Draw them in on discussions about their goals, performance and development plans. If your managers aren’t sure where to start, share these tips with them.

>> Do a goal review. Check in to see if goals are still SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic/relevant and time-bound). If you need to make any adjustments, now is the time.

>> Review employee development plans. Are your employees on track, or do their development plans need to be revisited?

>> Provide employees with feedback on competencies to keep performance top of mind.

>> Schedule a discussion with employees to talk about performance, organizational goals and address any questions or concerns either you or your employee might have.
