Many training professionals intuitively believe that online learning is becoming more common every day. A new study suggests how quickly this field is growing. The global market for online learning products is expected to reach $49.9 billion by 2015, according to a study by the international research group, Ambient Insight Research.
This reflects a 9% calculated annual growth (C.A.G.R) since 2010, when the market for e-learning products was estimated to be $32.1 billion.
The study includes a wide variety of products, including online training courses, blended learning materials, interactive guides, course notes with multimedia elements, and instructional videos. It includes both custom content and off-the-shelf products. It also includes hosting and tool development programs.
However, this rapid growth is taking place primarily outside the U.S.
The approximately $7 billion U.S. e-learning product market is predicted to see a relatively slow rate of growth. It is expected to reach only $7.1 billion by 2015. The company cites slow jobs growth due to the recession, pricing pressures, and commoditization.
But according to Ambient’s study one U.S. sector might be a glaring exception. Sales of e-learning products to the U.S. health care sector are expected to see over 18% growth. Health care is seen to be relatively recession-proof.
